THE NORTH WEST REGION
Venue and Facilities
Prior to affiliation, clubs should ensure their premises meet the minimum requirements for setting up an boxing gym.
Before your club is able to affiliate, it will need to be inspected by a
representative from the NORTH WEST REGION .
Until your premises have been inspected and passed, your club cannot be
affiliated and is not covered by England Boxing insurance.
To ensure that the venue and equipment are safe and 'fit for purpose', it is
a good idea to perform a risk assessment. This is a check of facilities, equipment and safety procedures to ensure that they comply with the
standards expected by England Boxing . Undertaking a risk assessment is also a
good means of preventing accidents by making sure activity delivery and
safety provision are checked on a regular basis by the club. If risks or hazards
are identified they should be reported.
Every boxing club should designate a person or persons with lead
responsibility for promoting the welfare of children within the sport and
dealing with any concerns about the protection of children.
Every club linking with schools should have a designated person for child
protection and these are usually referred to as Club Welfare Officers. This is a
requirement of Clubmark accreditation, which is the accepted minimum set of
standards for clubs linking with schools.
Club Welfare Officers ensure that the club promotes and fulfils its
responsibilities for child welfare. They should take a key role in ensuring that
child protection issues are addressed and discussed in schools when entering
into any agreement to deliver sporting activities for pupils.
They need to ensure that there is clear understanding and a written agreement about:
Emergencies and first aid
All volunteers involved in club activities should be aware of emergency
procedures. A copy of the procedures should be posted in a public area,
with copies - including emergency contact details - should be given to those taking a responsible role in the club.
Health and safety
Clubs must have a qualified first aider present at training sessions and
events. It is also recommended that club members attend recognised first aid
training courses so that they can respond to first aid situations confidently.
You should also have a first aid kit available at the club and training events.
It is good practice to record any accidents or incidents that are dealt with
by club members in order to help identify accident trends and provide documented evidence of action, should it be required. If a club employs ten people or more it is a legal requirement to keep an accident record book.
Management and Administration
Clubs that are well managed tend to be clubs that are the most successful.
They have well ordered finances, and both members and volunteers are kept
informed through good communication. The day-to-day running of the club is dealt with efficiently and strong links are formed with external partners such as
local authorities, County Sports Partnerships, schools and the North West Region as well as the ABAE.

The Club Committee
A club committee is elected to run the club, with different people identified to take on different roles. It exists to serve the club and ensure the best possible service is given to tis members. As the club grows it might be sensible to create some sub-committees to take responsibility for different aspects of the club, for example the junior section, social, coaching, facilities &equipment etc.
The club committee should have at least three elected officers:
Other positions can be outlined in the constitution, according to requirements. It is recommended the committee meets once a month or every other month to review the operation of the club.
Recruiting and training volunteers is a difficult task, but is vital for the future of most clubs. People who emerge as volunteers are the lifeblood of a boxing club, yet often are taken for granted. As people's time becomes more valuable it is important that clubs consider their volunteers; how they can recruit, support, recognise and reward the work they do.
To find your volunteers you need to have a clear understanding of why you
want them. If you identify clearly when, where and why you want help and then seek it in an organised way, people are more likely to step forward and offer assistance.
Ideally one of the club's members should take charge of new volunteers.
This role is commonly referred to as the 'Volunteer Co-ordinator' and will be
required to spend time training mentoring and managing each volunteer to ensure that they are being deployed effectively and are enjoying their role.

Affiliation and club constitution
The North West Region is the regional governing body for amateur
boxing in the North West area. It takes responsibility for managing and developing services for the sport, organising regional and national competitions and selecting teams to box nationally and internationally. It also provides support and guidance for all North West clubs at a local level.
By being affiliated to the England Boxing through the NW Region, your club will be able to enter competitions, train and qualify coaches and officials and be part of the 'bigger picture' of boxing.
There is a charge for affiliation, but if your club and it's members are serious about boxing, affiliation will provide significant benefits in terms of support towards development and for funding applications.
All clubs require a club constitution. This is a simple document that sets out the functions of the club and its procedures for membership, meetings and committees. It is often a prerequisite of many grant aid bodies and funding
programmes, and also of Clubmark.
Be careful to ensure your constitution does not exclude anyone on discriminatory grounds.
